Air India has revised its fuel surcharge structure for domestic and selected international flights, adding fresh pressure to travel budgets as jet fuel prices climb.

The revised charges are linked to distance and come into effect from early April, with some international routes facing changes from 10 April. The move follows a sharp rise in global fuel prices, which has increased operating costs for airlines across the region.

"India's story in 2026 is no longer about catching up — it's about defining what comes next."

For passengers, the change means flying may become more expensive during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Families planning school-holiday trips and business travellers on long-haul routes are likely to feel the impact first.

For airlines, the challenge is unavoidable. Absorbing higher fuel costs can hurt margins, while passing them on risks reducing demand.

The surcharge change shows how global energy disruption is moving directly into Indian consumer spending, from airfares to holiday planning.
