India has moved to soften the impact of rising aviation fuel prices by capping the monthly increase in jet fuel prices for domestic airlines.

The decision comes as airlines face a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel costs linked to global oil market disruption. Fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for carriers, and sudden increases can quickly affect fares, route planning and airline profitability.

"India's story in 2026 is no longer about catching up — it's about defining what comes next."

The cap is designed to prevent an immediate shock to passengers and the aviation sector while still recognising the pressure facing oil marketing companies.

For travellers, the measure may help avoid sudden fare spikes, although ticket prices are still expected to remain under pressure during the summer travel season.

The aviation industry is now navigating a difficult balance: strong travel demand, fewer available flights on some routes, higher fuel costs and price-sensitive consumers. April could be the beginning of a more expensive travel period for Indian passengers.
