Mahindra & Mahindra's June sales numbers have given India's auto market another clear sign that sport utility vehicles remain the industry's strongest growth engine. Mahindra sold 1,06,207 vehicles in June 2026, a 37 per cent year-on-year increase, with domestic SUV volumes crossing 60,000 units for the first time.

The SUV figure is the headline. Mahindra's domestic utility vehicle sales reached 60,393 units in June, up 28 per cent from 47,306 units in June 2025. That pushed the company past a psychological monthly threshold and underlined the depth of demand for vehicles such as the Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar and other models in its utility range. Month on month, SUV sales were also higher than May's 58,021 units.

The growth was not limited to passenger SUVs. Mahindra's exports rose to 5,918 units, a 125 per cent increase from 2,634 a year earlier. Its light commercial vehicle business also grew, with domestic sales of LCVs below two tonnes up 36 per cent to 3,508 units. The two-to-3.5-tonne LCV segment rose 35 per cent to 22,568 units. Three-wheeler sales increased 63 per cent to 13,820 units.

The farm equipment business added another layer to the result. Domestic tractor sales stood at 58,177 units, up 12 per cent from 51,769 units in June 2025. Total tractor sales, including exports, reached 59,935 units, while tractor exports rose 8 per cent to 1,758 units. That matters because tractor demand is often read as a rural sentiment indicator, especially during the monsoon and sowing period.

Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of Mahindra's automotive division, said June SUV sales of 60,393 units and LCV under-3.5-tonne sales of 26,076 units reflected robust growth across the portfolio. The company's numbers also fit a wider auto pattern in which Indian buyers continue to prefer higher-riding, feature-heavy vehicles even as affordability pressures remain visible in smaller segments.

For the broader economy, the figures point to two separate trends. Urban and semi-urban buyers are still spending on aspirational vehicles, while rural-linked tractor demand has not collapsed despite weather uncertainty. Exports also suggest that Indian automakers are finding openings outside the domestic market. The next numbers to watch will be dealer inventory, waiting periods and the mix between new bookings and dispatches.
