Delhi has tightened its heatwave action plan as temperatures rise, with authorities moving toward a Cool Roof Policy for 2026.

The city has already applied reflective coating across parts of Kashmere Gate ISBT to help reduce indoor temperatures. Officials are also considering measures such as pausing outdoor work between noon and 3 pm during severe heatwave conditions.

"India's story in 2026 is no longer about catching up — it's about defining what comes next."

Workers may be provided drinking water, caps, gamchas, first-aid kits and ice packs at worksites when needed.

The plan reflects a growing recognition that heat is a serious urban risk, not just a seasonal inconvenience. Dense construction, traffic, limited shade and air pollution can make Delhi's heat feel more intense.

Cool roofs will not solve the problem alone, but they are a practical start. If expanded across public buildings, schools, bus depots and low-income neighbourhoods, they could help make the city safer during extreme heat.
