India App Revenue Hits Record $345 Million In Q2 As AI And Streaming Drive Paid Growth
India's mobile app economy reached a new monetisation milestone in the second quarter of 2026, with Sensor Tower estimating record in-app purchase revenue of $345 million and more than 6.6 billion.

India's mobile app economy reached a new monetisation milestone in the second quarter of 2026, with Sensor Tower estimating record in-app purchase revenue of $345 million and more than 6.6 billion downloads. The numbers matter because India has long been described as a download giant but a low-spending market. Q2 suggests that picture is changing. Downloads remain enormous, but revenue growth is increasingly being led by premium AI tools, streaming, short drama, digital services and games that are learning how to convert scale into paid behaviour.
Sensor Tower said India's app revenue rose 35 percent year on year in Q2, while non-gaming apps accounted for 70 percent of downloads and nearly $240 million in revenue, up more than 50 percent from a year earlier. Generative AI, video entertainment and local services were prominent in download rankings. ChatGPT ranked first by downloads, while JioHotstar, Story TV, Blinkit and Rapido also appeared among the country's leading non-gaming apps. The report said India has become one of ChatGPT's largest markets, with cumulative downloads surpassing 358 million.
The monetisation shift is not confined to AI. Sensor Tower said Story TV emerged as India's leading short-drama app, with cumulative short-drama downloads across the category passing 800 million. JioHotstar remained a major entertainment force, helped by cricket and short-drama programming. Meesho led shopping-app downloads, extending local commerce beyond the largest cities, while Rapido recorded its highest monthly downloads in May and became India's top ride-hailing app by monthly active users in Q2. The pattern is clear: local use cases, entertainment habits and high-frequency services are all contributing to scale.
Gaming also showed resilience. Sensor Tower estimated Indian mobile game revenue above $106 million in Q2, up 10 percent year on year, even as the global mobile gaming market weakened. Ludo King retained a leading download position, while football title eFootball benefited from World Cup interest. This matters for developers because India is no longer just a market for user acquisition or ad-supported installs. It is becoming a place where some categories can build direct consumer revenue if pricing, content and payment flows match local behaviour.
The caveat is that India is still a lower-spending market on a per-user basis than many other regions. Advertising, telecom bundles, subscription fatigue and disposable income all shape how much consumers are willing to pay. But the direction is important for founders, investors and global platforms. India now offers both reach and a fast-growing paid layer. The winners are likely to be products that combine local relevance with enough daily utility or entertainment value to justify recurring spending. Q2's record revenue does not end the monetisation debate, but it changes its starting point.
For Indian startups, the report offers both encouragement and warning. Consumers are paying, but they are not paying for everything. The categories showing traction tend to solve recurring needs, carry strong entertainment pull or provide obvious productivity value. Apps that rely only on downloads may still struggle if they cannot build habit and trust. The next phase of India's app economy will likely reward sharper product design, regional language depth, payment flexibility and strong retention. Scale remains India's advantage, but Q2 shows that monetisation now belongs in the first business plan, not as an afterthought.
