India's Asian Games Finish Turns A Late Gold Rush Into Fourth Place
India closed the 2026 Asian Games with 85 medals and fourth place after a late surge across cricket, hockey, golf, archery, boxing and wrestling.

India's 2026 Asian Games campaign ended with the kind of late surge that changes the memory of a tournament. Indian Express reported that India finished fourth in Aichi-Nagoya with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, for a total haul of 85.
The final table matters, but the route to it matters more. India looked uneven for much of the Games before a sharp late run turned a campaign that seemed to be drifting into a fourth-place finish ahead of Uzbekistan, Iran and Thailand.
Indian Express framed the closing phase as 10 golds arriving in 48 hours. That mattered because athletics, badminton and shooting had not matched previous expectations. The finish instead came from a broader mix that included archery, boxing, wrestling, golf, cricket and hockey.
Cricket delivered one of the most public-facing moments. The ICC reported that India defeated Pakistan to win the men's cricket gold, with Abhishek Sharma's 61 setting the tone after Shreyas Iyer chose to bat. Pakistan took silver and Sri Lanka won bronze.
Hockey added a second major Olympic-cycle signal. Indian Express reported that the men's team beat Malaysia 5-1, defended its Asian Games title and secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That followed the women's hockey team's own breakthrough gold earlier in the Games.
The medal list also carried firsts and long waits. Indian Express highlighted Kumkum Anil Mohod's individual recurve gold, the women's recurve team ending South Korea's 28-year hold, Neeru Dhanda's trap gold after a 48-year wait and Pranavi Urs winning India's first golf gold.
The sharper takeaway is not that India matched one dominant sport to a medal table. It is that the late push came from several disciplines at once. That gives administrators both a celebration and a checklist: protect the gains in emerging medal sports, and fix the areas where India expected more.
