India's home ODI season has begun with a result that will please both fans and selectors. The first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram ended in an eight-wicket India win, built first by Kuldeep Yadav's wrist spin and then completed by centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.
West Indies were not passive opponents. Justin Greaves and John Campbell started quickly, putting on 135 for the first wicket in 19.2 overs. Campbell made 62, Greaves reached his maiden ODI century, and Amir Jangoo's unbeaten 58 helped the visitors reach 295 for 7. On another day, that total would have applied sustained pressure.
Kuldeep changed the rhythm. His 4 for 40 pulled India back after the West Indies openers had threatened to make the afternoon uncomfortable. Prasidh Krishna added two wickets, while Nitish Reddy also struck. That kept the chase within a range where India's top order could control the second half of the match.
Gill and Kohli then made the target look lighter than it was. India reached 300 for 2 in 41.4 overs, with Gill making 110 and Kohli finishing unbeaten on 139. The ICC report noted that Kohli also crossed 15,000 ODI runs, becoming only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to reach that landmark, and brought up his 55th ODI hundred.
The result gives India a 1-0 lead before the second ODI in Guwahati on September 30. It also gives the team management a useful opening data point. Gill's authority as captain and top-order anchor, Kohli's continued ODI command and Kuldeep's middle-over control all answer questions India will keep revisiting on the road to the 2027 World Cup.
For West Indies, the loss still contained positives. A 295-run score in India, a century from Greaves and an aggressive opening partnership are building blocks. The issue was conversion under pressure. Against India, a strong start is rarely enough unless the bowling group can create early wickets and stop one of the senior batters from settling.
