Reliance Industries has used its 49th annual general meeting to put Jio Platforms, artificial intelligence, satellite broadband and clean energy at the centre of its next growth story. The headline business move is Jio Platforms' proposed initial public offering. Times of India reported that the company has submitted draft documents for a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares, a plan that could become India's largest public issue if the expected scale is achieved.
The meeting was also a broader statement from chairman Mukesh Ambani about where Reliance wants to sit in India's economy by the end of the decade. Jio is no longer being presented only as a telecom business. It is being framed as a digital infrastructure platform with 5G, fixed wireless broadband, satellite connectivity, AI infrastructure and consumer technology all feeding into the same system. That matters because investors will judge the IPO not only on subscriber numbers, but on whether Jio can turn its reach into durable revenue from data, enterprise services, AI tools and connectivity for underserved regions.
The satellite broadband section of the AGM was especially important. Akash Ambani said Jio's next mission was to connect places beyond conventional network reach, including remote villages, island regions and border locations. According to the Times report, Jio is assessing a sovereign low-earth-orbit satellite constellation while also working with global satellite operators and leasing capacity to speed up rollout. That gives the business two tracks: immediate service expansion through partnerships, and longer-term domestic capability if the economics and regulation support it.
Artificial intelligence was the other major pillar. Reliance Intelligence, announced last year, is moving from planning into implementation. The group said it wants to build AI infrastructure, platforms and services for consumers, businesses and government. The AGM message was clear: India should not remain only a user of foreign AI systems, and Reliance wants to make AI more affordable in the way Jio once changed mobile data pricing. That claim will be tested by the cost of compute, power availability, data governance and whether Indian-language services are reliable enough for mass adoption.
The IPO will also arrive as Reliance's leadership transition nears completion. Mukesh Ambani said his children Akash, Isha and Anant are now overseeing key businesses and managing day-to-day responsibilities across telecom, retail, digital services and energy. That makes the offering a market event and a governance event. Public investors will be watching how the next generation runs the group's most visible growth engines.
For ordinary readers, the important point is that Jio's proposed listing is not just a financial headline. It could shape how India pays for digital infrastructure, how satellite internet reaches difficult terrain, how AI becomes affordable and how large conglomerates fund future technology bets. The promise is large. The proof will come in execution: network quality, IPO disclosures, AI pricing, rural service delivery and whether Jio can turn a giant user base into a broader technology platform without losing trust. The market will now wait for the prospectus detail, because those disclosures will show which ambitions have numbers behind them.
