The India Meteorological Department issued late-April warnings for heatwave, hot and humid weather and warm night conditions across several parts of the country.

Heatwave conditions were forecast in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Bihar, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.

"India's story in 2026 is no longer about catching up — it's about defining what comes next."

Hot and humid conditions were also expected in parts of coastal Maharashtra, coastal Gujarat, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Kerala.

Warm nights can be especially dangerous because they reduce the body's ability to recover after daytime heat. This can increase health risks for people without adequate cooling or ventilation.

The late-April forecast shows how widespread India's summer stress can be. Heat, humidity and warm nights are different conditions, but together they can make daily life harder and more dangerous.
