Large parts of India were placed under fresh heatwave warnings this week, with the India Meteorological Department warning of severe conditions across several northern, central and eastern regions.

The alert covered areas including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal, with hot and humid weather also expected in parts of southern and coastal India.

"India's story in 2026 is no longer about catching up — it's about defining what comes next."

The warning comes at a time when cities, schools, employers and local authorities are being pushed to respond faster to extreme heat. Public health officials continue to urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid peak afternoon exposure and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

The risks are highest for outdoor workers, elderly people, children, street vendors, construction workers and residents in poorly ventilated homes.

India's summer season is no longer just a weather story. It is a public health, urban planning and labour protection issue that cities will need to manage more seriously every year.
